CPMA Calls on Optum to Reverse Misclassification of DPMs
The California Podiatric Medical Association
(CPMA) has formally written to Optum Health, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth
Group, Inc., expressing deep disappointment and serious concern regarding the
company's recent decision to reclassify Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) as
"Allied Health Professionals."
This reclassification fails to recognize the
extensive medical education, rigorous training, and licensure that DPMs
undergo. It is important to note that DPMs possess the same legal authority as
Medical Doctors (MDs), Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), and Dentists
(DDS/DMD) to diagnose, administer medical and surgical treatment, and prescribe
medications for patients. Furthermore, this classification contradicts federal
laws, including the Social Security Act and CMS regulations, which explicitly recognize
DPMs as physicians.
In light of this, CPMA urges Optum to immediately
reverse the reclassification, restore DPMs to their rightful status as
physicians and surgeons, and align their benefits and leadership opportunities
with their medical and surgical qualifications.
